1/29/2007 High School Already?Tonight we had Sarah’s High School orientation. The main focus tonight was on what classes the kids can take. Sarah was recommended by her 8th grade teachers for three honors classes which are Honors English, Honors Biology and Honors World History. In talking to a few of the teachers tonight, they thought that taking three honors classes was pretty tough, especially for a freshman in high school. So now Sarah has to think if she really wants three honors classes or drop one of them and just take a normal class in it’s place. The hard choices for Sarah have started, but I am very lucky to know many good people who can offer advice and her 8th grade teachers can also offer advice. Sarah will be starting high school next year – wow – times goes by too fast. 1/8/2007 Sarah and her Girl Scout PatchFor Girl Scouts, Fall Product sales, there was a “Patch Design” contest that they have each year. Sarah entered the contest this year and out of 150 entries, she had the design that won!!! So her patch design was selected this year and from her drawing, the company made a patch that will be given to over 300 Girl Scouts from our council. I’m very proud of her. 1/1/2007 Lincoln Park Homeless ShelterThis Weekend I did a new volunteer event. It was at the Lincoln Park Homeless Shelter on Chicago’s north side. I found out about the event from NAAAP web site. The event was organized by one of the members of NAAAP and it was to cook for about 20 homeless men who are being helped to get out of poverty. We cooked Ham, mashed potatoes, Pasta Salad, green salad and cake for dessert. We had about 15 volunteers and I did things like peel a LOT of potatoes, chop some garlic for the mashed potatoes, washed dishes and serve food. There was food left over, so we got to eat as well. The food was great! It was nice to see that all the volunteers were younger than I was. Haha. The volunteers made it a fun evening and this is a great way to meet new people who share the same interest as I do for volunteering. |
